Plant a tree, snap a photo and post to Instagram and Facebook using hashtag #PlantATreeWithVGSAndMe
South Burlington, Vermont – Vermont Gas celebrates Earth Day by challenging its employees, customers and communities to help combat climate change, protect our river and stream banks, and beautify our streets and towns by planting a tree. The Company announced today it was giving all employees and customers who came to its South Burlington headquarters on Earth Day a sapling to plant. The challenge is for all to plant a tree, snap a photo and post it on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #PlantATreeWithVGSAndMe.
“Sustainability is something that is embedded in our culture at VGS: we provide an energy choice that has far less carbon impacts than alternative fuels, we are focused on innovative climate solutions such as renewable natural gas, and we enable our employees to make smart choices when it comes to their personal carbon footprints,” said Tiana Smith, Culture and Talent Lead at VGS. “This tree planting challenge is a win-win-win; we cut carbon, get outside and have a little fun.”
While people get most carbon through eating, trees breathe it in the way that humans breathe in oxygen. When a tree breathes, it inhales carbon dioxide and exhales oxygen – the exact opposite of humans. As a tree matures, it can consume 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and releases enough oxygen for you to breathe for two years.
Other Earth Day efforts include removing individual trash cans to reduce its waste stream. VGS also encourages employees to find alternative transportation to and from work, participate in a personal energy assessment to see individual carbon footprints and set personal sustainability goals.
