Call Before You Dig
Call 811 before digging to comply with Vermont law, locate underground utility lines, and help prevent damage to critical infrastructure. Dig Safe is a free service.
It’s free. It’s easy. It’s the law.
Whether you’re planting trees, installing a fence, building a deck, or beginning a construction project, Vermont law requires you or your contractor to contact Dig Safe before digging. The service is free and helps identify the approximate location of underground utility lines before excavation begins.
By calling 811 at least 72 hours before digging, you can help prevent damage to underground infrastructure, avoid costly repairs, and protect the safety of your property, family, neighbors, and community.
Why Contact Dig Safe?
It’s Free
Dig Safe is a free service that coordinates with participating utilities to identify and mark underground facilities before excavation begins.
It’s the Law
Anyone planning to dig on private property must contact Dig Safe before excavation begins. This includes projects such as:
- Installing a fence
- Planting trees or shrubs
- Building a deck
- Installing a mailbox
- Excavating for construction projects
- Digging trenches or post holes
It Helps Prevent Damage
Underground utility lines may be present even when there are no visible signs above ground. Contacting Dig Safe helps reduce the risk of striking natural gas, electric, telecommunications, water, or other utility infrastructure.
If You Hit a Natural Gas Line
- Immediately Call 911, your local fire department, and VGS at (802) 863-4511
- Call VGS even if the line doesn’t appear to be leaking. We’ll inspect the area and make any necessary repairs.
- If gas is leaking, move everyone a safe distance (at least 330′) from the area. If you can smell gas, you’re too close. Don’t cover the leak with dirt. This will not prevent gas from escaping and could cause it to migrate to other locations.
