Your Safety Is Our Priority
At VGS, safety is at the heart of everything we do. Natural gas service interruptions are uncommon, but planned maintenance or unexpected events can occasionally affect service. When an outage occurs, our teams are trained to respond promptly and safely restore service.
Preventing Outages Whenever Possible
We work diligently to prevent outages before they occur. Our advanced monitoring systems and proactive maintenance help us detect and fix issues early—often before they impact service. Most repairs can be resolved with a routine visit. More extensive needs may require a temporary service interruption. When that happens, safely restoring service is a step-by-step process that involves coordination between our team and our customers. For larger-scale events, we may need to shut off gas to affected areas to protect public safety and make necessary repairs before service can be restored. For a more complete description of the service restoration process, please see the Steps outlined at the bottom of this page.
To keep you informed, we provide a real-time Outage Map. It shows current service interruptions and restoration progress in your area, so you have insight into what’s happening and what to expect:

How We Restore Your Natural Gas Service
Restoring natural gas service requires a careful, safety-focused process. The steps below explain what happens during a service interruption and what customers can expect as service is restored.
In the event of an unplanned outage, we work with local first responders to assess the situation and secure the area. A temporary evacuation may be necessary as part of the restoration process. Our goal is always to make the area safe so you can return to the area as soon as possible. If your gas meter is located inside your home or building, we may need your help to access it. In urgent situations, the local fire department may assist in gaining access.
Next, we identify the source of the issue and may shut off gas service in the affected area. We confirm that all meters attached to buildings are turned off before making repairs. The duration of repairs depends on several factors. Underground repairs could involve excavating, and most can be completed within a few hours. In cases of more extensive damage, we may need to replace a section of the gas system, which can take longer.
Once repairs are complete, we begin the restoration process. Our technicians go door-to-door to gain admittance so they can relight appliances. Someone must be at the property for us to complete this step. If you’re not available, we’ll leave a door tag and ask that you contact us at (800) 639-8081 or (802) 863-4511 to arrange access. It should be noted that this can be lengthy process depending on the number of customers impacted and the availability of individuals to provide access to perform relights.
