Company sponsors statewide event, hosts annual employee-led green up

South Burlington, Vt. – It’s a time-honored, rite of springtime in Vermont: Thousands of Vermonters take to the roadsides, fields and stream banks to clean-up and green up our beautiful state. Vermont Gas employees are once again pitching in and picking up trash along our roads in honor of the state’s Green Up Day festivities. In addition to being a ‘Davis Friends’ sponsor of Green Up Day Vermont again this year, the Vermont Gas team collected dozens of bags of litter and trash around the city of South Burlington to help kick off Vermont’s 49th annual Green Up Day celebration, which officially took place on Saturday, May 4.

“Making our state a little greener and helping out customers live a little greener is what we’re all about. Our team at Vermont Gas is passionate about helping our customers and communities make smart and sustainable choices –Green Up Day is a great way to do just that,” said Tom Murray, vice president of customers and communities. “We provide great ways for Vermonters to move to a cleaner energy future: Converting to clean and reliable natural gas, signing up for our first-in-the-nation renewable natural gas program or participating in our award-winning energy efficiency programs will help Vermont families and businesses reduce carbon in the here and now.”

Natural gas is the clean, reliable and affordable heating choice of more than 53,000 customers in Chittenden, Franklin and Addison counties. By making the switch to natural gas and by participating in the Company’s efficiency programs, customers last year averted almost 320,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That is the equivalent to the annual energy use of almost 39,000 homes.

“Green Up Day is all about the community coming together with a shared vision of a clean and sustainable Vermont,” said Sue Killoran, Interim Executive Director of Green Up Vermont. “We are embarking on our 49th year of greening up this special place and it wouldn’t be possible without the help of our communities, our volunteers and sponsors like Vermont Gas, who not only contribute financially but also take the time to really make a difference. We are so grateful.”
