Excess Flow Valves (EFVs) are safety devices designed to automatically restrict the flow of natural gas if an underground service line is damaged. These devices provide an additional layer of protection and are one of several safety measures used throughout the Vermont Gas system.
What Is an Excess Flow Valve?
An Excess Flow Valve (EFV) is a mechanical safety device installed on certain natural gas service lines. In the event a service line is broken or damaged, the EFV is designed to automatically restrict the flow of natural gas.
Damage to underground service lines is most commonly caused by excavation or digging activities.
How EFVs Support Safety
EFVs are one of several safety measures used to help protect the natural gas distribution system. Vermont Gas has proactively installed EFVs on new service lines for more than 25 years in addition to other safety devices such as regulators and curb valves.
Today, more than 70% of Vermont Gas service lines are equipped with an EFV.
